1. FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE – INTRODUCING 2018 DECATALKS!

Washington DECA is so excited to welcome two inspiring speakers to the stage for our DECATalks general session at Fall Leadership Conference!

The Journey from Mullets, Rick Astley, and High School DECA to Successful Entrepreneur

John Vlastelica was a business geek – he was a scrappy entrepreneur as a 10-year-old (an early “manager” in his lawn mowing “business”), he read Fortune Magazine FOR FUN in high school, occasionally wore suspenders and a tie to school BY CHOICE (wait, what?), and loved DECA. In 1988, he represented Washington State at the National DECA Entrepreneurship competition and placed 3rd in the nation. #Boom. He went on to graduate first in his class from university, worked in interesting companies, and then launched his own business 13 years ago. John will share career advice he learned the hard way, including why it’s important to work for bad bosses, why it’s critical to work in a job where you’re over your head, why it’s bad to be the smartest person in the room, and what 100+ companies John has consulted with say they really want in new hires.

Kizzy Willey-Ricedorff: Athlete, Model, Mentor, Inspirational Speaker.

As a coach and entrepreneur, Kizzy is the CEO of “Get Up 10.” She travels the Western States to hold summer volleyball camps, and she speaks to athletes and students as well as numerous businesses and events throughout the country on building strong mental skills including mental imagery, positive self-talk, managing emotions, managing anxiety, teamwork, motivation, and other significant blocks in creating mental strength and perseverance.

Be prepared to walk away from this general session with a new sense of how to take on the world – both from a business, personal, and academic standpoint!!

4. WA DECA DRESS CODE

As many of you are aware, DECA has implemented a Dress Code change regarding skirt and dress length. They are requiring that all skirts and dresses be at or below the knee.Washington DECA will also adopt this new requirement this year. An updated Dress Code document will be provided soon.

FLC Process. At FLC, we don’t issue Dress Code violations, but a verbal warning may be given, suggesting they re-visit the Washington DECA Dress Code policies before State and International competition to avoid penalty points at those events.

6. MEMBERSHIP GROWTH BENEFITS AND INCENTIVES

BENEFITS

Membership growth has a positive impact on students, chapters, the chapters’ Areas, and communities!

Student Access. Increased student membership means that more students have access to the DECA Experience, which—as our Vision states—prepares them to be innovative leaders and entrepreneurs who make a positive social and global impact.

Communities. Communities benefit from DECA programs through community service efforts. The more student involved in serving their communities, the better for all.

State Competition Opportunities. Increased Area membership increases the chance that the Area can send more students to compete at the State conference.

International Competition Opportunities. If Washington DECA’s overall membership increases to 12,000, Washington will gain competitive event allocations for the International conference.

Professional Members. Gaining professional members increases awareness of DECA, gives advocates an opportunity to make a difference, and may lead to additional chapter support.

Alumni Members. Alumni members are proud of their past involvement in DECA, and given the chance, most would want to stay involved at some level. In addition, WA DECA hosts alumni events throughout the year that are a big hit!

INCENTIVES

Give Us Five Membership Drive. Washington DECA’s Give Us Five Membership Drive is similar to DECA’s Membership Campaign, but not quite as aggressive. Chapters that increase each member type (student, alumni, and professional) by five members over last year (by February 15) will receive Give Me Five ribbons to wear and will be recognized on screen at SCDC. Please see the attached Give Us Five flyer.

Largest Chapter. The largest chapter in Washington will be recognized on state at SCDC.

Largest Percentage Growth. The chapter with the largest percentage growth over last year will be recognized on stage at SCDC.
